Summertime in Placerville means plenty of hot, sunny days, excellent hiking, and, above all, some of the best white water rafting in California. Although many California rivers are rendered useless for white water rafting during the hot summer months due to low water levels, the American river that runs through Placerville still yields some excellent rapid fun from April til September. There are various routes to choose from, according to level of experience – from beginner to expert. Because of the wonderful summer weather here in Placerville (usually in the high 80s to 90s), white water rafting becomes a thrilling way to cool down. What’s more, you can see the American River from the Placerville grounds and the rafting launching points are nearby so getting back to your cozy bed at Edenvale Inn with your loved one is easy after an exhilarating ride down the American River. Raft rentals and tour guides are available in the area.

About a 15 minute drive from Eden Vale Inn is wonderful foothill hiking and mountain biking. The foothills don’t get any better, with the area offering views up and down the South Fork of the American River and views of the Sierra Crest that divides the foothills from Lake Tahoe. The Crystal Range (Sierra Crest in the area) is often covered in snow into May. During the summer the foothill temperatures can be hot and you may prefer instead a High Country hike. Foothill hiking is best October through May. By December the area is green and accessible and stays free of snow all winter. Spring is the prime time for a Sierra Foothills hike. The the wildflowers come out and the foothills are a carpet of green. More information is available at the inn including local maps.
Our favorite foothill hike at Cronan Ranch is the West Ridge Trail. This easy 1 ½ hour walk offers great views of the American River and Crystal Range.

High Sierra Day Hiking
These High Country Trailheads are around a 1 hour drive east from Eden Vale Inn, Placerville, CA. Elevation ranges are between about 5,000 feet and 9,000 feet.
These day hikes are a great way to escape the summer heat due to their elevation. These routes are chosen for the ease of access and scenery. You should not go unprepared. At a minimum have a good sun hat, sun block, sunglasses (it’s bright in the thin air) and carry water. A day pack with extra clothing, mosquito repellent, flashlight, matches, and some food is a good idea. There are several USFS ranger stations along the way where we recommend that you pick-up a map. Some of these hikes enter Wilderness Areas and day hikers can self register at the trailheads.
Northern California is widely renowned for the art of wine-making, but what about the art of banner-making? Beginning on June 8th and ending on October 12th, Placerville will be holding its annual Banners on Parade. Artists from the area will produce beautiful masterpieces on banners that will be strung along light poles on Main Street. It has become huge attraction to Placerville since 2005 when artists displayed their work on wheelbarrows and then in 2006 when wine barrels were used as the medium. In 2007, banners were utilized and has since become a smashing hit with locals and tourists alike. It has become an annual focal point for four months out of the year, with everyone looking forward to the artful displays to brighten up Main Street. On October 19th, the paintings will be held up for auction during our Art and Wine Festival. Don’t miss the opportunity to see some wonderfully talented artists proudly display their work while you enjoy a romantic weekend with your loved one at Edenvale Inn.
We Northern Californians may be famous for our wine, but we also love our beer and Placerville likes to celebrate this classic beverage with our very own Bell Tower Brewfest! This year the festival will be taking place on June 29th on Placerville’s historic Main Street which be blocked off for the safety and enjoyment of the fest-goers from 6pm to 9pm. The festival will feature 35 different crafted brews as well as live music to boogey down to while you sip on Placerville’s finest lagers. Tickets are limited and are expected to sell out so get them while you can! See more information here. Or call (530) 672-3436 for more information. Summer is just around the corner and the flowers are abloom in the Edenvale gardens. This is a perfect time to get away from it all with your loved one and enjoy the scenery and the sunshine at Edenvale Inn. Not to mention all the fantastic events Placerville has to offer this summer. I’ve already mentioned a few of them, and here’s another that’s coming up on June 8th: The Wagon Train and BBQ rib cook off.
If you’re a fan of some finger lickin’ BBQ ribs, you can’t miss this event. They do it every year and believe me, these ribs are to die for. Besides that, they’ve got live music, a beer garden, historical displays, and western shoot-outs. If you and your loved one love delicious BBQ ribs and a good ol’ country western time, then make sure you don’t miss out on this event. See more information about 2013 Wagon Train & BBQ Rib Cook Off here.
Then come home to scenic Edenvale Inn to kick off your boots and spend some romantic quality time with your loved one.
Romance and a touch of Tuscany in…Placerville! By SHARON PENNY
If you are looking for a romantic getaway or a mid-week respite but just don’t have the time to travel to the beach or the mountains, look no further than the fabulous Eden Vale Inn in the foothills near Placerville. Tucked away off the main roads but easily accessible, this B & B will surprise you from the minute you drive in. Originally a hay barn built in 1919, the structure then became a home and continued it’s evolution in 2006 when Mark & Gayle Hamlin purchased it, thus beginning its quest to become the unique inn it is today. Mark and Gayle are the ultimate experts on the history of the Inn and the surrounding area. They are quick to suggest places to hike, bike, swim, dine, shop and wine taste. But the property itself offers so much that you might find it difficult to venture out! The mix of rustic and ultra modern is everywhere – from the original building with it’s gorgeous stone fireplace and rough sawn beams of the main house (you have to see it, I can’t do it justice in print!) – to the chic and romantic guest rooms. Each of the seven rooms is unique. All are modern, supremely comfortable and luxuries abound. Each room has a computerized lighting system – some with a button marked “romance”. Push that and lights dim to be replaced by the flickering fire. Nice touch. We stayed in one of the ‘Penthouse’ rooms called the Madrone Room. With a view of the beautiful swimming pond, surrounding foothills, and the gorgeous firepit where you can chat with other guests, this room is the largest at the Inn. We had a table and chairs outside our door and a bottle of local red wine waiting for us complements of Mark & Gayle. There’s a kitchenette between the two penthouse rooms for use by both. Afterall, we did need a refrigerator to keep our bubbly cold! What’s a romantic getaway without champagne? Enjoy your Champagne while relaxing in your outdoor (and oh so private) soaking tub. Don’t forget to pour in the lemon verbena bath salts made locally. Ahhh.
The beautiful gardens surrounding the Inn are extensive and have been meticulously nurtured over the years by Gayle. There are benches and fountains tucked away throughout the property. A great time to take a stroll through the gardens is after enjoying the sumptuous breakfast personally planned by Gayle. You can dine indoors or out on one of the many decks. Much of the food came from Gayle’s garden or locally sourced. There is even a warm and inviting on-site spa studio where you can be pampered with single or couples massages and facials. Just book ahead for spa services. After experiencing this jewel in Placerville, I guarantee two things: first, you will have had one of the most pleasurable experiences a B & B can offer, and second, you’ll be back!
