If you’re looking for some good hiking, I have two trail suggestions this week. The first one is the hike to Black Hole of Calcutta Falls. This is an easy, leisurely hike of 2.1 miles through wispy forest that ends at the breathtaking Calcutta Falls. Calcutta Falls flows year-round and is an excellent place to take a stroll and have a picnic in the warm California sun.
For those of you who are looking for a more strenuous hike, I recommend . The hike is a lengthy eight miles filled with constant elevation changes, which make the hike so strenuous. The length of it runs along the Jenkinson Lake where you can take a dip if you get too hot. The hike can also be done on horseback.
Black Hole is about 12 miles and Jenkinson Lake at Sly Park is about 20 miles from Eden Vale Inn Both are lovely places to spend your day while you have a romantic stay at Edenvale Inn.
Every now and then, Placerville likes to get a little crafty with our annual Craft Faire. This year will be Placerville’s 17th annual Craft Faire and will take place on Sunday, August 11th from 8am to 3pm in Historic Downtown Placerville. Main Street will be closed to traffic during those hours to host over 100 artisans from all over the west. Crafts will include pottery, jewelry, woodwork, quilted and decorating items, dolls, garden items, soaps, candles, food and more. And if you happen to be an artisan yourself, it’s not too late to apply to be featured in the Craft Faire. You can download the application here: http://www.placerville-downtown.org/pdf/2013craftcontract.pdf
Otherwise, admission and parking are free. So whether you enjoy original artisan crafts, or have a craft of your own that you would like to display, there’s no better place to be than Historic Downtown Placerville and no better place to stay in the area than Edenvale Inn.
One of the best things about staying at Edenvale Inn is the fact that it is located in beautiful, historical Placerville. Though the town itself may be small, what it lacks in size it makes up in spirit and activities. There is always a multitude of events to participate in for the couple who seeks to keep their relationship active and fun. This coming August, on the 22nd from 5PM – 8PM, the city of Placerville will be hosting their Hangtown Car Show with free admission and parking. Perhaps the hubby would like to enjoy some automobile spectating while the two of you have a wonderfully relaxing weekend at Edenvale Inn. This is the perfect place to fit in a variety of different interests, and the car show is only one of the many enticing events Placerville has to offer.
Summertime in Placerville means plenty of hot, sunny days, excellent hiking, and, above all, some of the best white water rafting in California. Although many California rivers are rendered useless for white water rafting during the hot summer months due to low water levels, the American river that runs through Placerville still yields some excellent rapid fun from April til September. There are various routes to choose from, according to level of experience – from beginner to expert. Because of the wonderful summer weather here in Placerville (usually in the high 80s to 90s), white water rafting becomes a thrilling way to cool down. What’s more, you can see the American River from the Placerville grounds and the rafting launching points are nearby so getting back to your cozy bed at Edenvale Inn with your loved one is easy after an exhilarating ride down the American River. Raft rentals and tour guides are available in the area.
Come to The Wine Smith, Down Town Placerville June 22. Anderson-Gram will be performing at 8:30. There is a $5.00 entry fee. Anderson-Gram is a wonderful husband and wife duo from Hampton, NH (now living in Cameron Park, CA) who play a delightfully easy going blend of folk, country and bluegrass. The Wine Smith has a selection of over 200 different varieties of wine, champagne, and port. Come enjoy the music, spirits and good company. Always something good happening in Placerville.
Would you like to stay at Edenvale for a romantic weekend, but don’t know what to do with your Saturday afternoon? You might be surprised at all Placerville has to offer. If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you are well aware of our active, bustling community that is the home of Edenvale Inn. Besides our numerous festivals, we also have ongoing events throughout the summer. One of my favorites is Music in the Courtyard. Local bands come to perform for us at the Fountain Plaza Courtyard on historic Main Street. You can hear these talented musicians play every Saturday from 1pm to 4pm all of June through October. If you’re interested, here’s the lineup:

About a 15 minute drive from Eden Vale Inn is wonderful foothill hiking and mountain biking. The foothills don’t get any better, with the area offering views up and down the South Fork of the American River and views of the Sierra Crest that divides the foothills from Lake Tahoe. The Crystal Range (Sierra Crest in the area) is often covered in snow into May. During the summer the foothill temperatures can be hot and you may prefer instead a High Country hike. Foothill hiking is best October through May. By December the area is green and accessible and stays free of snow all winter. Spring is the prime time for a Sierra Foothills hike. The the wildflowers come out and the foothills are a carpet of green. More information is available at the inn including local maps.
Our favorite foothill hike at Cronan Ranch is the West Ridge Trail. This easy 1 ½ hour walk offers great views of the American River and Crystal Range.

High Sierra Day Hiking
These High Country Trailheads are around a 1 hour drive east from Eden Vale Inn, Placerville, CA. Elevation ranges are between about 5,000 feet and 9,000 feet.
These day hikes are a great way to escape the summer heat due to their elevation. These routes are chosen for the ease of access and scenery. You should not go unprepared. At a minimum have a good sun hat, sun block, sunglasses (it’s bright in the thin air) and carry water. A day pack with extra clothing, mosquito repellent, flashlight, matches, and some food is a good idea. There are several USFS ranger stations along the way where we recommend that you pick-up a map. Some of these hikes enter Wilderness Areas and day hikers can self register at the trailheads.
