The warmer weather makes this a perfect time to go gold panning and learn gold rush history, all right near Eden Vale Inn. Here are our favorite places for both.

Gold panning at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park Coloma CaliforniaMarshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park

California Gold Rush history is at the center of Coloma, California. Marshall Gold Discovery Park is open almost every day of the year. They offer gold panning lessons, gold panning supplies, and gold rush history tours every day, weather permitting. This is where James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill. The Marshall Gold Park has a great museum, outdoor exhibits, gold panning lessons, tours, and docents who present living history demonstrations and talks.

There are great hikes in the park too - by the river, up along the ridge, and up to Marshall’s Monument. The Monument was recently re-dedicated for its 125th year. It offers great views of Coloma. When you come back down to Main Street, make sure to visit the blacksmith shop where volunteers make iron items in front of your eyes.

If you come on the second Saturday of the month, you are in luck. Second Saturdays are Living Gold Rush History days in the park. History comes alive! Volunteers in period dress demonstrate aspects of pioneer life, such as tin smithing, rope making, candle dipping, and old-fashioned log sawing. The activities are hands-on, and kids love doing these activities.
