The South Fork of the American River, the most popular whitewater rafting destination is in California. And, it’s only minutes from our Placerville bed and breakfast. Fun for the entire family is to be had on the South Fork’s numerous Class III rapids. Trips are half-day or whole day adventures on up to 17 miles of river. Outflows are under the control of a dam providing consistent flows everyday this summer except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Middle Fork is a canyon of scenery interspersed with challenging Class IV rapids. It has water everyday all summer long. The North Fork on the other hand is Class IV and only in the spring run-off. The South Fork has a Class II section suitable for easier family trips.
The three forks of the American River originate in the high Sierra Nevada just west of Lake Tahoe. The South, Middle and North forks flow through the true heart of the Sierra Foothills Gold Country and converge east of Sacramento. Today they end in Folsom Lake reservoir.

Three Forks of the American:
The South Fork is the most friendly and welcoming of the three. West of the Rockies, more people float the South Fork of the American than any other river. Guaranteed rafting flows every day this summer except Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Middle Fork’s canyons provide challenging terrain and wilderness. In addition, the Western States Trail, which hosts multiple annual endurance events, including the world-famous Western States 100-Mile Run, lines the canyon. Guaranteed flows every day this summer.
The North Fork is best left to the experts as it is wild and difficult. Summer flows are too low for boating.
